Hi, Mike. Just stopped by to thank you for helping out on the Bradford County, Florida 1880 spreadsheet. We are over half way through! By the way, I see we are 20th cousins once removed.
Hi Mike,

It is once again time for our annual Ireland Project check-in. Please respond within the next three weeks to let us know:

  1. If you would like to continue as an Ireland Project member. If your answer is yes, please tell us if you are happy with your current team, or if you would prefer to join a different one. If you are currently participating in more than one team we would appreciate you ranking them in their order of importance to you, from highest priority to lowest. This information will be helpful as we consider possible future changes to our team structure.
  2. In the past, the project has had a very minimal membership requirement (one contribution per year) for badged members to meet. Do you believe this is adequate, or should this requirement be increased? What do you believe would be a reasonable commitment to expect from all project members?
  3. How active have you been in the Ireland Project over the past year? Please choose one of the following options: a) I normally spend 1-5 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. b) I normally spend 6-10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. c) I spend over 10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. d) I am not able to contribute every month but have spent approximately ________ hours during the past year improving Irish profiles.
  4. Please provide feedback on any things you’d like to see the project do more of in the future.

You can respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within the next three weeks we’ll assume your interests have changed or you no longer are able to participate in the Ireland Project at this time, and your badge will be removed. If your circumstances change later you will be welcome to reapply for membership.

Many thanks for all that so many of you have contributed to the project in the past year, and very special thanks to those who answered the project’s call and gave generously of their time to be part of Team Seanchaithe during the most recent connect-a-thon. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello Mike!

I’m conducting the 6-month check in for the US Black Heritage Project. Because we are growing so fast, it’s not always possible for me to see what everyone’s working on.

I’d love to hear what you’ve been working on and if you are still happy being a part of the Heritage Exchange team. Members can change teams at any time.

Emma

Hi Emma. I'm still working on adding profiles for people from censuses and wills. I also have added people in the cemetery project. I'm happy to keep doing these things. Thanks.

Wonderful! Thanks for all your hard work. Emma
Hi Mike,

We have learnt, to our dismay I must add, that members are not clear about the Ireland Project or its aims and about the structure of the teams within the Ireland Project. (Please forgive the message if you are fully aware of how the Project works. Please also excuse any duplication if you are on more than one team.)

We apologise for this confusion which should not have come about and hopefully we can do something to remedy the situation.

I have devised a PDF file giving an introduction to inform you of the role of the county teams (and Province Teams or Counties team), to explain the structure of the teams and to let you know what is expected of you as a member.

Ireland Project - Counties Teams An Introduction.

This PDF is hosted on the Google Drive of David Loring so if you have any problems accessing it please contact him. The PDF is downloadable from the viewer.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to reach out though private message, Discord or our Google Group.

Kind regards David Ireland Counties Coordinator

Hi Mike,

It’s time for our annual Ireland Project check-in! Please respond within the next two weeks to let me know:

  • If you are happy with the team you’re on or if you’d like to make a change. It is now required that all members with an Ireland project badge work on at least one of the project’s team(s), so if you’ve not yet signed up please do so in your reply to this check-in.
  • What you think the project is doing well, and what (if any) changes you would like to see us make? Are there any teams you would like to become more active in?
  • Would you be interested in helping to work on an Ireland Project newsletter?
  • Please give us some feedback on the use of google group and discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way for us to ensure you receive project communications? If you would like to join us on either one, just let us know in your response and we will get you signed up.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within two weeks, we will assume you are no longer interested in participating in the Ireland Project, and your badge will be removed. If you wish to reapply for membership later, we will be happy to have you back. Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Jen Hutton, on behalf of the Ireland Project

Hi Jen. I haven't looked at the project much. I think I can help out on the unsourced profiles. I'll be happy staying with the Ulster group. I'm sorry, I don't have time to help much beyond that.

Hello Mike,

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Hi Cheryl. I do have a question. Can you take a look at my profile for Henrietta Scurlock, Scurlock-137. I'm trying to use the repeated use of the same source in the same profile. I thought I had it right based on source help, but it doesn't look right to me. Thanks!

Hi Mike,

Thanks for taking responsibility for the Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.

Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources, merge duplicates, clean up GEDCOM biographies, and interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!

Debi

PS If the profile needs GEDCOM cleanup, the AGC tool can help with formatting so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

Hi Mike

Thanks self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Collaboration with Pre-1700 Project members is essential for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Collaboration is essential because those ancestors are usually shared by many descendants.

It looks like the Palatine Migration and the United States Projects would be a good fit based on your branch of WikiTree. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Do you have any questions? Let me know by using the "reply" link under my comments or by clicking my name to visit my profile. From there you can leave a comment or send a private message. . I'm happy to help! :-)

Thank you for adding your DNA to WikiTree. Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree. Also, tThe GEDCOMpare process guide has tips on how to use the data in your file most efficiently.

You mentioned that you don’t know much about your family tree yet. I assume you are new to genealogy. No problem! Every genealogist is a beginner at some point. Take your time, keep track of sources, and ask questions. Check here for tips.

Welcome to the community!

Hi Pip. Thanks for the help. I'm a little confused. I uploaded a Gedcom but I'm not sure what happens after that. Does it not help fill in a tree? Also, I listed my dna as Ancestry, but do I upload it?
posted by Mike Greer
S, WikiTree does not accept raw DNA data. All you need to do is enter the tests you have taken. Then as you add your family lines, WikiTree will propagate your DNA through our Shared Tree.

As for gedcoms, WikiTree used to allow unrestricted gedcoms, but his was causing so many duplicates it made extra work for members trying to merge them all. So, WikiTree instituted the GEDCOMpare process to eliminate duplicates. (See the link I sent you.) Once you confirm all of family members as not duplicates, yiu can add them automatically.

Hope this helps,

Pip

Thanks Pip. I added my parents and grand parents. When I added my grandparents, it said they already existed in the tree. I clicked on Go for the WikiTree ID of the person who had added them. But I don't see them anywhere. If I go to my mother's profile and click on her father, nothing is there. How do I move beyond that stage? What am I doing wrong?
posted by Mike Greer
Ok, I think I figured out what was wrong. All four of my grandparents had orphaned profiles. I had to go in and adopt them before I could move up.
posted by Mike Greer
Excellent! Glad you were able to figure that out and that you are now the manager of your grandparents profiles. Good stuff!

Hi Pip. I changed my profile name from S. to Mike. I've got a quick question. After I create a profile and I add sources, Wiki still puts a banner on the profile that says:

"This profile lacks source information. Please add sources that support the facts." It has a warning and is in a yellow box. Why is that happening?

Mike

posted by Mike Greer
Mike, send me a link to a particular profile, and I'll see what's up.

Ahh! I see what it is. When you are in edit mode on a profile, you need to manually remove this “Unsourced” . (It’s above the bio.) Once you do that and safe, the banner will disappear.
