Biography

Notables Project
Raymond Greene is Notable.

Charles was born in 1901. He was the son of Charles Greene and Marion Greene. Raymond was the older brother of the novelist Graham Greene and the broadcaster and BBC executive Hugh Greene.

It is said that in his teens he accompanied his sister Molly and expert rock climber Ashley Adams on an expedition to Pillar Rock in the Lake District. On this trip a rope malfunctioned and he is credited with saving the lives of his companions.

Raymond Greene attended Oxford, having earned a scholarship to Pembroke College, and graduated in 1927. He studied medicine and as an undergraduate also explored the Lake District and visited the Alps in Switzerland as a member of the University mountaineering club. He became both a renowned doctor and mountaineer.

He served as a doctor on several expeditions. During World War II he worked as a doctor with Special Operations Executive (SOE) and as advisor to the armed forces on the effects of high altitude and cold on the human body. He researched frostbite and altitude sickness during his mountaineering expeditions, helping to explain how extreme environmental conditions affect respiration.

He married American born Charlotte Mackenzie in 1925 in Oxfordshire. How long this marriage lasted is uncertain. He remarried when he was 30. His new bride was Eleanor Craven Gamble, born in St Louis, Missouri. They were married in 1934.

Raymond Greene went on to become an expert in the treatment of thyroid and other endocrine diseases, migraine, and frostbite. He has been credited with coining the term "pre-menstrual tension".

He acted as medical advisor to President Charles de Gaulle during his State Visit to England in 1960 and was awarded the Legion of Honour of France (noted on one website, and medal is now in the possession of a relative).

In his later career, Greene wrote several books including Human Hormones in 1970, his own autobiography Moments of Being: The Random Recollections of Raymond Greene in 1974, and Current Concepts in Migraine Research in 1978.

He passed away in 1982 when he was 81 years old.
