George was born in 1842. He passed away in 1905.

The following story comes from the Clinton County, NY, Civil War Record 1861-1865 Facebook Page:

TWO BROTHERS SEPARATED AT MUSTER-IN - Stephen Green brought his family to Black Brook from Vermont to find work in the late 1840s. His wife, Lorinda Hackett, died there in February 1861. The family then moved on to Ellenburg. On October 18, 1861, two of their children, George and Robert went to Plattsburgh to enlist in the 16th Infantry.

They were mustered into the regiment on the same day expecting to serve for two years. However, Robert, decided to return to Ellenburg while George with thirteen other men who had enlisted during the same week.

They arrived while the regiment was at Fort Lyon, a timber and earthwork structure just south of Alexandria, VA, while the 16th was with the 1st Corps of the Army of the Potomac. The fort was started after the Union defeat at Bull Run about 30 miles to the west and became one of the ring of forts in the Defenses of Washington. The winter of 1861/62 was spent at Camp Franklin near Fairfax Seminary about five miles to the northwest.

On April 6, 1862, they were ordered to Catlett's Station just south of Bull Run, but at once were ordered to return to camp and they were in Yorktown, VA, on the coast by May 3rd. The regiment saw action at West Point, and at Gaines' Mill, where it lost 231 to casualty including almost 50 resulting deaths. After this battle they stayed on the field but weren’t closely engaged through the rest of the Seven Days’ Battles. They then camped at Harrison's Landing on the Potomac until August 16th and returned to Alexandria for a short time before heading north to Maryland. In the battle at Crampton's Gap on September 14th, they were in the advance of the troops going over South Mountain but were held in reserve at Antietam three days later. At the end of November 1862 George was discharged for disability. He married Sarah Giles in 1864 and had eleven children and supported them by farming and doing carpentry work. In the late 1880s, many in the family moved to Clinton, MA, to work in the mills. George died of stomach cancer there in 1905 when he was 61 and was buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Robert, the brother with whom he enlisted, died in January 1862, two months after he came home from enlisting in Plattsburgh.
