Biography

Captain William Green may have technically served in the Revolutionary War, and is listed as a Patriot in the D.A.R database, but there are issues with this. He was actually a Captain in the Navy, and perished at the close of the war, while serving, so I suppose that may be the reason he is considered a Patriot of the Revolution. Regardless, his father WAS a Colonel in the Revolutionary war. He was son of Col. John Green and Susannah Blackwell was born about 1750-1754 in Culpeper, Virginia. We know that he was lost at sea on the brig Defiance in 1783. This ship was inadvertently in the close of the Revolutionary war, and may be a reason why his widow received a pension upon his death in service to the U.S.A. for that time period. His wife, Lucy Clayton WILLIAMS can be seen as his widowed pensioner for his survivor's claim in Kentucky 1836. Perhaps this is where the mistaken and erroneous death date of 8 Apr 1835 comes into play. However, we know that the son of John Green and Susannah Blackwell married Lucy WILLIAMS because their son, John Williams Green, became a Judge and fought in the War of 1812, therefore his biography had been written up in a couple locations. Otherwise, it is true that his mother was Susannah Blackwell, and his uncle, Moses Green, was married to his mother's sister, Mary Blackwell. It is well documented that the 2 of the sons of Robert Green and Eleanor Duff married into the Blackwell family, well less proof that their grandson Captain William Green did as well. There is more evidence that this Lucy Green, pensioner in April 8, 1835 widower of Captain William Green, was indeed the mother of Judge John Williams Green, and the spouse of the William Green born in Aug 1754 to John Green and Susannah Blackwell who died at sea in the Revolutionary War as a Captain.

William Green married Lucy Clayton Williams. They had a son, Judge John Williams Green was born in 1781 just two years prior to his father's death. You can read more about him here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_W._Green

A William Green married Lucy Blackwell in Fairfax (later Culpeper) County, Virginia on May 13, 1775. [1] [2]

Research Notes

Adams-16917 12:12, 23 October 2016 (EDT)

  • I have fixed some of the mistakes (but not all) recently created by the addition of a new profile for William and a new Lucy.
  • William Green and Lucy Blackwell married on 13 May 1775 in Fauquier County, Virginia BUT WAS IT THIS WILLIAM? No.[3]
  • he did not live to be 105 or 135 (another wrong profile)
  • his father Robert did not have 3 sons named William born 5 yrs apart (I removed one of them but think it was the wrong one.)
  • James born before 1775 marriage--wrong parents
  • 1791-- Woodford County, Kentucky Tax List[50] -- The Scott and Green persons who paid taxes in Book One, presumably tax district one, with no entry date for payment or assessment were Archelaus Scott, Robert Scott, Edward Scott, Jacob Scott, William Green, James Green. These same individuals were also named in Tax District Commissioner Book Two as well. Also, Commissioner Tax Book Two had no dates for assessment or payment. Those included in Book Two were Archelaus Scott, Robert Scott, Edward Scott, General Charles Scott, Jacob Scott, William Green, James Green, Thomas Harmon, William Harmon. Commissioner Tax Book Three included the following: James or Janes Scott, illegible given name, William Scott, Charles? Green, John Green.
  • Robert Scott’s first wife, Winifred Green's families were probably among those Green individuals who were taxed.
  • Changed his information from "Col" to "Lieutenant" "Captain", birthdate from 1756 to Aug 1754 Culpeper, VA. Changed the death date from 8 Apr 1835 to 1783 the year he actually died. The record associated with the 8 Apr 1835 is from a Pension in Kentucky for his widow, Lucy Green, and he is again, listed as a Captain, and a private.

I discovered quite a few easy resolutions with the problems in this profile: The death date is incorrect, and the spouse was Lucy Williams. This is anchored upon the fact that their son was a Judge and fought in the War of 1812. Issues surrounding this family include

Ann Coleman is married to the wrong William Green

This profile originally represented William, son of Robert Green, but was then moved to be the grandson (not sure why). Thanks!

Green-5078 and Green-4392 appear to represent the same person because: Both profits are spouses of the same Lucy Blackwell. Although dead dares differ, it is unlikely that "5078" lived 100+ years especially when spouse is documented as a widow bed. 1800
