"He was a native of Pennsylvania but his earlier life was spent at Urbana, Ohio and in Duke county. His parents died at New Madison. After a meager common school education young Gray studied law.... In 1855 he removed to Union City, Ind ... In 1862, Gov Morton appointed him colonel of the 4th Indiana cavalry and in 1864 he raised and organized the 147th Indiana. ..."[2]
