Paul, the son of Georgia L. Haltom of Sergeant Bluff IA and Ralph Gray of Amarillo TX, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on July 12, 1966 in Omaha NE. He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
Returning to their CP (Command Post) with a VCS (Viet Cong Suspect) in custody, the squad of Marines was hit with a heavy volume of hostile rifle fire from three directions as they approached a causeway east of the Thai Can River in Binh Son District. PFC Gray was hit and killed by the enemy gunfire and another Marine was wounded during the contact with the enemy.
