Henry Grady was born in Georgia.

Son of William Sammons Grady and Anne Gartrell, He was a journalist who was instrumental in the call for commercial and industrial development of Atlanta after the devastation of the U.S. Civil War.^[1] Grady was the father-in-law of Federal Reserve Chairman Eugene Robert Black and grandfather of banker and World Bank President Eugene R. Black Sr.

Henry's father William Sammons Grady was a Confederate States Army officer who died of wounds received at the Battle of the Crater. Henry was then raised by his mother Anne (Gartrell) Grady in Athens, Georgia. He attended the University of Georgia, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1868. There he was a charter member of the Eta Chapter of fraternity Chi Phi at the University of Georgia, and was a lifetime devoted member.

Henry worked briefly with the Rome Courier, the Atlanta Herald, and the New York Herald. Grady then returned to Atlanta as a reporter-editor for the Atlanta Constitution.
