In 1911 there are no Williams the right age in Ireland. There is a William Gracey in Blackburn, Lancashire which may be him, if so it indicates he probably joined the army (South Lancashire Regiment) before the war started.
He enlisted for the Great War (1914-18) and served with the South Lancashire Regiment 2nd Batallion, reaching the rank of Corporal.
William married Annie King on 3 March 1916 in the Lurgan Superintendent Registrar's District.[3] She was the widow of shop clerk Thomas King and had a young daughter Myrtle. No Gracey children were registered in Ireland in 1916 or 1917 to a McCausland mother.
He died in service in October 1916 and is memorialised at the A.i.f. Burial Ground, Flers CWGC Cemetery/Memorial, Somme, France. His name also appears on the War Memorial in Portadown.[4]
His widow remarried again and had two children with her new husband.
