When Elizabeth Gose was born in 1764 in Lehigh, Pennsylvania,[1] her father, Stephen, was 18, and her mother, Catharina, was 16[2]. She married Johann Jacob Kettering[3] in 1782 or 1783 in Montgomery, Virginia.[1] They had eight children in 15 years[4].[5] She died on August 31, 1845[1], in White, Tennessee, having lived a long life of 89 years.
It certainly is hard to keep all the different Kettenrings/Ketterings separate.
In the case of this Elizabeth, her husband appears to be confused with Johann Jacob Kettenring, son of Adam, in that both men are shown as having married Elizabeth Gose. But it's not even that simple. The Elizabeth Gose married to Johann Jacob son of Adam is a different Wikitree person from our Elizabeth here, although, I believe, not a different real person.
In addition, the other Elizabeth is shown to be the mother of Christina (Kettering) Cannoy, but not by Johann Jacob Kettenring (1738 - 1821), but rather, the father of Christina is shown as Johann Jacob Kettering (1737 - 1821), who is even more confusingly shown as the brother of the other Elizabeth's husband, notwithstanding a refutation of that idea (Stories about the two Jacob Kettenrings) in the biographies of both men.
That the real person Elizabeth Gose married Jacob Kettering, 1756-1816 (not 1738-1821 or some other) is indicated on page 103 of the 1956 edition of Henry Hardy Catron’s definitive work[3] (Also, a more accessible online version at the HathiTrust Digital Library[6]. Thanks, Stephanie!) It is in this work, by the way, that the father of Christina mentioned above is shown on page 150 as Jacob Kettering, 1728 - Oct 1821, Wythe Co., “Married.” -- but it does not say to whom he was married. It may be a little beside the point (or maybe not), but it looks to me like this man on page 150 is our best match, presently, to the Jacob Kettering who was the father of Christina by Elizabeth, but not Elizabeth's husband. And yet he doesn't quite fit either Elizabeth's 'other' husband or Christina's Wikitree dad, so there's still something we're apparently missing.
Henry indicated in his preface that his records would become available after his death. I haven't yet seen any citations here to his primary sources, but I certainly welcome any further information from fellow Wikitreers.
