Does this Matthew Richmond have a living male descendant named Richmond? If so, his Y chromosome haplogroup would be most interesting.

I descend from John Richmond, who lived in Taunton MA around 1650. His family is supposed to have come from Wiltshire in southern England. He had two sons, both of whom have male descendants named Richmond. The two lines (including me) have the same Y chromosome haplogroup, I-M253.

Matthew is a Scottish Richmond, with an ancestry back to the 1700s. It would be extremely interesting - and a first - if he had the same Y chromosome haplogroup (which originates in Scandinavia).

Hi Robert, thanks for being in touch. As you’ve written on my page I’m assuming you mean my Dad, Richmond-5175 and the straight answer is there are two sons and a nephew and a grandson, none of which have taken any DNA testing, but all of whom are direct descendants of Richmont-10. I agree, test results would be interesting and I would expect them to indicate some Scandinavian origin. I will see if I can persuade one of them and let you know if I am successful!
What I'm looking for here is men named Richmond who are in the direct male line from your original Richmond. The Y chromosome is inherited in the direct male line, so a man inherits it along with his surname. In the case of John Richmond in 1650, we know his Y chromosome haplogroup.

Hi Catherine,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.
