Biography

Jopseph William Goodman was born in 1901 or 1902 in Henderson, Kentucky in an area known as Fishtown. His parents were Thomas Goodman and Tura Dossett. Thomas was a fisherman as were Tura's father and brothers. In 1906, Joseph's father Thomas was killed by a young man named Ernest Pierce who the Goodmans regularly employed to help with their fishing business. Tura remarried another fisherman named Herman Gibson about a year later. Joseph went to school through the 8th grade. By 1918, Joseph and Tura lived in Evansville, Indiana without Herman, and Joseph worked as a horse collar maker. In 1919, Tura married a young man named Edward Davis who was about Joseph's age. In 1920, Joseph and his new wife Mary lived with Tura and Edward. Joseph and Mary went on to have three children: Lucy, Annie, and Joseph Jr. They lived in Evansville. Joseph Sr and Mary eventually divorced. Joseph had a brief marriage in 1944 to Emelyn Belden. He then married Bessie Milan to whom he was married until his death in 1953 when he drowned mysteriously in the Ohio River. They lived in Henderson. He was a manager at Anchor Supply in Evansville at the time.
