Biography

Milo was born in 1845. He was the son of Thomas Goodell. He passed away in 1924.

The following comes from the Clinton County, NY, Civil War Record 1861-1865 Facebook Page:

LONGEST LIVED BROTHER - The 14th Artillery was formed to supplement to troops in the field for the Siege of Petersburg in 1864. The regiment organized in Rochester and beside new recruits, they also had men who had served their two years in other regiments.

Milo B. Goodell was a new recruit expecting to serve for three years. He was an 18-year-old farmer who was born in Ellenburg. When he enlisted in Malone, he was 5’ 4” tall and had grey eyes and brown hair and was mustered into Company M as a private on January 4, 1864. So many men were recruited for the 14th, that Milo was transferred to the 6th Artillery in early May just before they went into battle at The Wilderness with the Army of the Potomac. He entered the battle as a corporal and for the next year he was in a dozen of the most famous battles of the war. Between the two regiments, there were over 1000 casualties. He was mustered out on August 24, 1865, in Washington, DC.

Milo returned to Ellenburg Center where his father was buried in 1855, and in 1870, he married Harriet Burbank in Malone. He left his wife and son behind when he decided to travel to the West. In 1890 he was living in Denver, supporting himself as a cabinet maker, and in 1899, he married a woman in Alabama. After 1900, he moved to California where he spent a couple of bouts in the Veterans Hospital in Sawtelle for chronic cystitis and rheumatism. Milo died in 1924, outliving by forty years his brothers, Hollis, Wilbur and Martin, who were also in the Civil War.
