Biography

Walter was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, on August 17, 1920. He was the son of Lawrence M Goldschmidt and Katherine Hoelzle. He was enumerated in the 1930 census [1] as a nine year old residing with his parents and seven siblings at 1237 Fifth Street, Philadelphia. He was one of seven children residing with his parents at 965 Fifth Street in 1940.[2] He was nineteen and a "Stock Clerk" at a Department Store.

Walter registered for the World War II Draft and listed 965 Fifth Street as his address. His employer was the Philadelphia Navy Yard.[3] According to his Veteran's Compensation Application, (dated June 22, 1950) Walter enlisted in the United States Coast Guard on October 27, 1942, in Philadelphia. He served domestically from October 27, 1942 until December 15, 1945. He served overseas from December 15, 1945 until March 2, 1946. He was separated from active duty on May 20, 1946 in Seattle, Washington. [4]

Although no documents found, family records indicate Walter married Marguerite Louise Bole in 1951. The couple would have eight children.

Walter passed away on March 19, 2001. [5] He was buried at St Denis Cemetery, Havertown, Delaware, Pennsylvania.[6] [7]
