Biography

Richard was born in 1746. He passed away in 1796.

2/2021: Find A Grave: Memorial #63461910, burial location unknown. Bio at this page identifies spouse Frankie Lowe and seven known children. On basis of children identified, JSC links Richard to daughter Sarah Golden-2525 Mackey.

The earliest ancestor of our branch of the Golden family that can be determined at this time is Richard Golden, who was from County Tyrone, Ireland.

Richard Golden was born around the year 1746 ( possibly earlier ) probably in or near the Parish of Ardstraw in the northwest portion of County Tyrone.

Recent info uncovered shows that a Solomon Golden was living in this area during the year of 1796. Although nothing is known of Richard's siblings or parents, there is a strong suspicion that this Solomon Golden was perhaps a brother ( or elderly father ). At present, no other supporting evidence, such as land or will search, have been found to indicate the type of relationship between Richard and Solomon Golden.

During the 1760's many Irish tenants were being forced out of their homesteads due to high rents being asked by their landlords. It is felt that this situation and the articles that appeared in the newspapers offering land in the " Colonies " may have helped stear Richard towards America.

Ireland was a nation divided by politics and religion, a country that had suffered invasion after invasion: the Celts, the Vikings, the Normans, and finally the English. Many attempts throughout the centuries to throw off the yoke of oppression by England have resulted in failure.

It has been determined that Richard Golden left Ireland and came to the American Colonies at least by the year 1767. Colonies like South Carolina and Georgia offered " free land " to the adventurers who were willing to make the 9-10 week voyage from England or Ireland. They would be granted so many acres of land depending on their marital status, number of children and willingness to clear the land and farm it for several years.

Several vessels sailed for America durind the period of 1764-1767. As reported by the " Belfast News Letter " the following ships sailed between belfast and Charleston, South Carolina; Prince of Wales - Belfast Pacquet - Nancy - Britannia - James & Mary - Admiral Hawke - Chichester.

Passengers had their food rationed in amounts that were not unequal to the amounts that prisoners in the jails were given. Lack of water & medical supplies combined with poor & non - existent sanitary conditions led to many immigrants dying before their voyage was completed.

According to family tradition, Richard first came to South Carolina, and after settling there for awhile went further south to Georgia. Richard married a woman named "Franky Lowe ", perhaps a nickname for Mary Francis. It is undetermined at this time if they were married in Ireland or if they married in the colonies.

Due to many other Golden families living in the Wilkes / Lincoln Co.,GA area, it is not possible to determine just where our Richard lived while there. Although census records indicate his children's birthplace as Georgia for the span of years 1767 to 1792, a possibility of South Carolina is also quite probable.

Research Notes

"From my intense search of the Golden family history, I have never found any evidence that Richard Golden was in SC. He was in NC, GA and TN per records. Please update the part where it shows he was in SC, because a different haplo group of Golden's lived in the Old 96 area of SC who are not kin to this line of Goldens. We are "G" Haplo and the SC group is "R" Haplo." - Carolyn Golden

Golden-3632 and Golden-562 appear to represent the same person because: Potential duplicate - same spouse

Per the merge suggestion.

I found the family of Richard Golden s/o John in the area of Bute County Tax Digest of 1771. Bute had been part of Grandville County and later after the Revolutionary War the name "Bute" was changed and this county was divided into Franklin and Warren Counties, NC. All this to say I also found in this same area the families of Stephen Lowe and also a Thomas Lowe. I'm not sure who was father and who was son or who Mary Francis "Frankie" Lowe's father was. I did find these two family in this location and believe that this is where Richard Golden and Mary Francis Lowe met and married. No proof of a marriage record has yet to be found. Richard and Mary Francis had two sons oldest Stephen and a younger son Thomas Lowe Golden so the name sakes connect to my belief. Carol Golden

Golden-562 and Golden-1092 appear to represent the same person because: Between the narrative in Golden-562 and the details of children in Golden-1092, I'm convinced these two profiles represent the same Richard Golden. Please merge them.

Richard Golden (1746-1796), while family lore says that he came from County Tyrone, Ireland, there is no known documentation or specific historical reason to believe this is true. Not that it may not be.

These Goldens will yDNA test as 'G2' Goldens. Several members of this family have taken advanced terminal SNP-level tests.

A second G2 Golden line, that of Mark "Marcus" Golden Sr., born 1762 in Lincoln, Georgia, is considered to be of the same yDNA line, although not a son of Richard Golden (c1746). He may have been a younger brother or first cousin ... however Marcus' line records that he was the son of Elender 'Eli' Golden, born about 1729 in Virginia.

Hey Mags!

The Wikitree match bot suggested that

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lowe-1335

is a duplicate for

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lowe-2773

I added profiles for Richard Golden and Mary Lowe several years ago when I was looking through the 1988 book The History of the Golden Family by Rollin G. Golden.

I only have a distant connection to the Golden family, so I haven't done any additional research on them. But - if you think that these are duplicates, I would certainly be in favor of a merge.

Thanks!
