Lewis Goings was born in Virginia, June 17th 1823, the 12th child of 13 children born to David Goings (1783-1840) & Susannah Williams (1783-1855). Lewis had 6 sisters and six brothers, and all the girls were born before the boys were born.

Sometime before 1846, census records show Lewis Goings had moved with his parents, from Virginia and was now living in Indiana. Also, at age 22, Lewis Goings married Elizabeth Ketterman. She was the daughter of Justus Ketterman and Mary Ann Wood or Woods. Lewis married Elizabeth Ketterman on April 2, 1846 in Delaware County, Indiana according to the historical record - Indiana marriage records. Elizabeth was 19 years of age. Five years later the census records show them living in Iowa.

Elizabeth and Lewis had the following children:

Justus Goings 1847-1850
Susannah Goings 1848-1902
Rebecca Jane Goings 1850-1935
Mary Ann Goings 1852-1934
William Lewis Goings 1855-1928
James Henry Goings 1857
Jacob Hunt Goings 1859-1859
Isaac Newton Goings 1860-1915
Edward Charles Goings 1863-1938
Sarah E Goings 1864-1880
John W 1868-1883

Under the terms of his mother's will, Lewis and his brother John Williams Goings received the family 80-acre farm in Delaware County, Indiana. The will also specified that Lewis A. Goings, John Williams Goings and their brother William Goings were to each have a horse.

In 1855 Lewis A. Goings joined his brother Joseph Addison Goings in removing from Indiana. In the 1856 state census they were recorded living in Benton County, Iowa. He elected to leave Iowa before the 1860 federal census and sold his land to Joseph Addison Goings.

Lewis left there for Smith County, Missouri, according to a family history written by Norman Haskell Goings in 1939. He wrote, "Lewis Goings landed there early in the 'grasshopper' year, and all his crops were consumed by the insects. He had four sons and two daughters who settled near him. He was a very large man, weighing 325 pounds. He next removed to Smith County, Kansas. He came back to Indiana on a visit in 1890, but he was there only a few days when his asthma became so bad he had to leave. He died August 18, 1890, shortly after returning to Kansas".

Elizabeth, Lewis Going's first wife, died in 1881 in April and Lewis married his wife's sister Rebecca Ketterman Kesling on Sept 20th, 1881 in Bloomington, Nebraska at the age of 58. Rebecca Ketterman was previously married to Andrew Kesling.

Nine years later, Lewis died at the age of 67, and is buried beside his first wife Elizabeth in Clemans Cemetery, now called Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Athol, Smith County, Kansas.

In the 1900 Census it shows Rebecca Goings, widow, age 64, living with two of her children; Louis N Kesling and William J Kesling.
