My interest in genealogy started with the realization that my mother's surname, Schoemeijer, was—and is—very rare in the Netherlands, and that most Schoemeijers, or even all, are related. I also knew that the family came from Amsterdam. So, when I was a student in Amsterdam in the mid-nineties, I started to visit the local archive, the Stadsarchief Amsterdam. Reconstructing that branch of my family tree turned out to be really exciting, and along the road I have learned much about local city history and life in the 18th and 19th centuries.

I learned that the Schoemeijers came from Germany (Vaihingen an der Enz, Württemberg), that there are many more ancestors from Germany (Römeling, Lustig, Jarle, etc.), but also that I have Swiss ancestry (Vogt, from Mandach near Basel), Norwegian and Danish ancestry. My own surname, Goedegebuure, is from the province of Zeeland (my Goedegebuure branch is from Sint Annaland; I suspect all Goedegebuure's ultimately are).

Ancestors of note and notoriety

Most of my ancestors hail from Amsterdam, where they sometimes lived in abject poverty, with high death rates for their children. But once in a while there is someone who stands out.

For starters, we have:

Charlemagne (748-814)

Maternal side

What needs to be worked out on Wikitree are the filiations between Baudoin (Baudoin III) "Baldwin" de Hainault (1088-1120) and the noble lady Alina Ovingh (1584-1632), the most recent member of nobility in my family tree: Baudoin III - Gerard van Dale (ca. 1115 - bef. 1166) - Hendrik I van Dale (ca. 1150 - ca. 1210) - Otto I van Dale - Hendrik II van Dale - Otto II van Dale - Ermgard van Dale - Elisabeth Droste von Lüdinghausen - Herman VII von Munster - Heinrich von Munster - Berend von Munster zu Meinhövel - (1) Hendrik van Munster - Herman van Munster - Agnes van Munster - Johan Ovingh - Aline Ovingh (ca.1584 - 1632) or (2) Mechteld Elisabeth von Munster - Mechteld van Ittersum - Hendrik Mulert tot den Ordel - Anna Mulert - Johanna Knoppert - Aline Ovingh

Paternal side

It is possible that there is also a connection on my father's side. The following filiations need to be added to Wikitree. The uncertain link is marked -??.

Gottfried (Gottfried II) "Graf von Arnsberg" Arnsberg m. Elisabeth - Adelheid/Agnes von Arnsberg, m. Konrad II von Rudenberg[2]- Konrad III von Rudenberg[3] - Gottfried II von Rudenberg[4] - Palmania von Rudenberg m. Wichard von Ense - Heinrich I. von Ense - Gerd von Ense - Regula von Ense m. Goddert von Meschede - Christina von Meschede zu Alme m. Dietrich Schade zu Hüsten - Dietrich Schade - Anna Schade m. Dietrich Lauwermann - ?? Martinus Lauerman

Martinus Lauermann (abt.1530-1588), priest, refugee, minister

Martinus was born about 1530 in Münster as the son of Dietrich Lauermann, Gograf (judge), and Anna Schade, daughter of Dietrich Schade, domdechant in Münster. The Schade family belonged to the local nobility. This lineage probably protected Martinus against severe punishment for his shenanigans. Martinus was originally a Roman Catholic priest in Alberslohe near Münster. During the visitation of the diocese of Munster in 1571 it became clear that Martinus no longer adhered to the Catholic faith, and also that he lived in concubinate with Fenne, his cook. Moreover, he did not dress like a priest, and ran a beer brewery from his home, which he was not supposed to do. His claims that he would better his life were not found to be trustworthy, and he was that year removed from office:

In Alberslohe dominus Martinus Louwermann alienus a catholica religione. Pastor alter ob haeresin privatus per archidiaconum loci[5]

Having abandoned the Catholic faith and having been removed from office, Martinus and his family, consisting of wife Fenne, and children Dirck and Joost, moved to Noord-Holland in the Netherlands between 1571 and ca. 1575. There he became a Protestant minister. Martinus was called to serve in Friesland, where he passed away in 1588 in Sneek[6]. Martinus was the first in a long line of ministers Lau(e)rman in Friesland.

Patroclus Römelingh (1576-1647), minister, poet

Patroclus arrived in the Netherlands from Germany around 1596 to study theology. After his graduation Patroclus was called as minister to the following three Dutch Reformed Congregations (1600-1603)[7], Ruinen (1603-1621)[8], and Farmsum (1621-1647) until his death.[9]. He wrote several poems.[10]

In 1618-19 Patroclus represented Drenthe (together with Themo ab Asscheberg) at the Synod of Dort, which met from 13 November 1618 to 29 May 1619.[11]

Patroclus at the Synod of Dort

Around 1610[12] Patroclus married the Lady Alina (Aeltien) Ovingh from Ruinen, daughter of Lady Johanna Knoppert and Lord Johan Ovingh and descendant of Charlemagne.

Jan (Spangert) Spaniaert (abt.1590-bef.1664), not so famous fine art painter of farm house and shed interiors

Jan Spaniaert/Spangert was a fine art painter of farm, shed, and tavern interiors who was not that successful. He married Margriet Hackijn as his second wife. Margriet was originally a smuggler of beer and banished from Holland. However, she became a successful innkeeper and merchant in tobacco. Jan ran the inns with her after his marriage, and was probably more successful in that profession.

Jan Spanjaert (Amsterdam circa 1590 – later than 1664) “Interior of a tavern”

Margriet Hackijn (abt.1595-bef.1664), smuggler of beer, innkeeper

Margriet Hackijn and her first husband Anthone Warni were party-people: Anthony Warnier, born in Luik, musician (speelman) by profession, and his wife Margriete Hacquem, were accused of the smuggling and storage of beer into Leiden. That means that they tried to avoid paying taxes on beer, which were quite high, by smuggling beer into the city. The prosecution recommended whipping and 50 years of banishment from Holland and West-Frisia for Anthony, and whipping and 25 years of banishment from Holland and West-Frisia for Margriete. Anthony received whipping and 12 years of banishment[13], Margriete 12 years of banishment[14]. They did leave Leiden, but they certainly did not leave Holland. On the contrary, they move about 24 km southwest to Delft, where they became innkeepers and merchants in tobacco. They owned the inn Het Vergulde Hackmes (Rietveld 127), and also ’t Cleyne Hackmes (Rietveld 111).

Mathijs Abrahamsz van Ceulen (abt.1599-bef.1644), Director of the Dutch West India Company

Mathijs was a Director of the Dutch West India Company.

Claes Jansz van Straten (ca. 1600), owner of the Delft Blue workshop "De Lampetkan"

Claes was a "plateelbakker"[15], a ceramist of the famous Delft Blue earthenware. He started his training in the Delft Blue workshop "De Porceleyne Schotel" in 1620, and later bought the Delft Blue workshop "De Lampetkan". On June 26, 1650, Claes became a Master Plateelbakker[16]

His daughter Jannitge Claesz, was married to Jacob Wemmersz. Hoppesteyn, founder of the Delft Blue workshop the "Moriaenshooft".

Abraham Trommius (1633-1719), theologian

Source: Wikipedia.

"Abrahamus Trommius (August 23, 1633 — May 29, 1719), also known as Abraham Trom, was a Dutch pastor and Reformed theologian. He belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church. He is known for his concordance to the Bible, nicknamed De Trommius.

Trommius studied philosophy, literature, and theology at the University of Groningen. After completing his studies in Groningen, he made various study trips abroad; he ended up in various locations such as London, Geneva, Basel and Montauban. After his academic studies he started in 1657 at the ministry in Haren (within the province of Groningen). In 1671, he left Haren for the city of Groningen.

In addition to preaching, he also focused on writing a large number of theological works. The best known of these was his concordance to the 1637 States Translation, with which he immediately gained fame upon publishing. In 1662 he started with his father-in-law Johannes Martinus, with a start to this work in which the various Bible places are indicated per word in which the word in question appears.

After the death of his father-in-law in 1665, he continued this large-scale work alone. During the period 1672—1691 the complete concordance of both the Old and the New Testament saw the light. This standard work in three parts became a concept and appeared many times in reprint, up to the present.

In 1717 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Groningen for it.

In addition to this concordance, he also made one for the Septuagint in 1717, the Concordantiae Graecae Versionis Vulgo Dictae LXX Interpretum."

Hendrik Jans van Hummel (ca. 1699 -1746), inn keeper, murdered with an axe and knife

Hendrik Jans van Hummel and his wife Hendrina Garrits Moespot were the innkeepers of the inn "De Drie Kieften" in Joppe, Gelderland. On 13 Nov 1746, Jan Jacobs Nissel, a deserter, arrived at the inn for the night. Later in the evening, after having shared a meal with the family of the inn keepers, he asked for more beer. While Hendrik went down into the cellar, Jan checked the bedstee of Hendrina, picked up an axe standing there, and went back to the dining room. Hendrina, suspecting something was wrong, called her husband and explained to him in a whisper that Jan had taken something. Jan became angry about the whispering, and Hendrik asked him either to go to bed or to leave. While Hendrik was getting ready for bed, Jan hit him with the axe at the back of the head. Hendrik fought back, Jan lost the axe, took his knife and slit Hendrik's throat. Jan also slashed Hendrina in the neck three times, and hurt the 82 years old father of Hendrina. Jan was convicted, then crucified. At the cross his limbs were broken, and then his head was chopped off.[17]

Jacob Wilhelm Lustig (1706-1796), organist and composer

Jacob Wilhelm was a famous organist, music scholar and composer[18][19][20][21]. Some of his work can be enjoyed here and here. In 2012 the Stichting Groningen Orgelland created a video about the work of Jacob Wilhelm. Beno's Stad (21-12-2006) narrates his life, music, and writings. As Conrad Wohlgemuth Jacob Wilhelm published scathing reviews of his colleagues.

Huibrecht Battij (1845-1928), and his family of prostitutes (?) and beggars

Huibregt, born in Middelburg, belongs to a family where most of the women had children out of wedlock. He himself had four children with Lena Cornelia Goedegebuure before they married, but at least he was officially known as the father of his children. This is different from his mother, sister, and maternal aunts. His mother Johanna Catharina Battij gave birth to two children, Huibregt and Wilhelmina, in both cases father unknown. His sister Wilhelmina gave birth to Cornelia, father unknown. His maternal aunts Josina and Cornelia Adriana gave birth to two children each, fathers unknown.

On 16 Dec 1854, when Huibregt was nine years old, his mother was arrested and thrown in jail in Middelburg (Zeeland) for a month for panhandling. Ten years later, on 6 jul 1864, Johanna was admitted at the hospital for problems with her legs ("uitzetting aan haar benen"). Remarkably, they let her stay in the hospital for 11 years (until 4 sep 1875) when Johanna was dismissed for breaking the house rules.

While it cannot be proven that the women were indeed prostitutes, Huibrecht's mother was certainly a beggar. Huibrecht himself couldn't read or write, so probably had not gone to school, which is another indication that they lived on the streets or at least in very difficult circumstances.

DNA tests

The results of the different DNA tests are sometimes wildly different: how to assess the difference between 1.1% English and Welsh DNA from 23andme and the 56% of FTDNA? Or the 26% Netherlands and Gemany DNA from FTDNA and the 79% from 23andme? Since I am overwhelmingly Dutch and German, and have thus far only one remote ancestor from London, it seems that for me FTDNA is less reliable than 23andMe.

You can also use our new maintenance categories - feel free to add them to your own family, or any other Jewish Roots profile, or work on the maintenance yourself, such as adding new records to profiles with only a couple sources.-I'm sending an invitation to join GoogleGroups, which we are re-starting this week. We'll probably do most group chat there, but the most important things will be posted on G2G, which you will be notified about if you follow the jewish_roots tag.

-You can also join Wikitree's discord server, where we have a Jewish Roots chat channel.

-If you have ideas or suggestions for the project, feel free to reply here or send me a message.

Thank you! -Elaine, co-leader for Jewish Roots Project

Hi Petra,

We're so happy to see you are still active on WikiTree and caring about the Dutch profiles. The Dutch Roots Project is looking forward to give the project a new fresh start to put the Dutch in a more prominent place on the WikiTree map. The project is currently managing over 50,000 profiles and the total number of Dutch profiles on WikiTree exceeds 500,000! Within the project we are monitoring the quality of the Dutch profiles and assisting other WikiTreers in producing those profiles. We would love to pick up some other tasks but to do so we need more volunteers. This is why we check in with the members of the DRP to see if you would like to help us expand.

1) Would you like to do some volunteer work for the Dutch Roots Project? 2) If yes, what kind of work would you prefer to do within the Dutch Roots Project? E.g. translating, sourcing, or something else you want to work on?

We hope for a positive reaction but please don't feel obliged to volunteer. We just want to have a group of persons we can ask to help us with certain activities

Kind regards,

Jan, on behalf of the Dutch Roots Project

Hallo Jan,

Hallo Jan,

Hi again,

I sent you a message a couple of weeks ago on behalf of the Germany Project and have not yet heard back from you. I hope you are well!

If I don’t hear back from you by the end of April, I will assume you no longer wish to be a member of the Germany Project and I’ll go ahead and remove you from our member roster. You are, of course, welcome to rejoin at any time via our G2G sign-up post.

Best wishes,

Hi,

The Germany Project Leaders are doing their semi-annual check-in with all project members and we want to verify that you’re still interested in being a member of the Project. Please respond by private message and let me know.

REMINDER: We use Google Groups for project collaboration and you aren’t yet a member of the group, please submit a join request here (make sure to add your name/WikiTree ID to the request).

Are you currently working with one of our Sub-projects or Teams? If not, take a look at our main Project page for a full list. We recently launched a new Profile Improvement Team and are seeking new team members. Let me know if you’re interested.

We really appreciate your contributions on WikiTree, and thank you for all your hard work. If you have any questions, please ask. We would also love to hear any feedback you may have for the project.

Hi Petra,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working within the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus, whether time period, location, or special event. Read the goals and tasks of the project and join if it is a good fit.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.
