Biography

Benedetto Glorietta is born around 1791 in Monreale, the son of Biagio Glorietta and Giovanna Mini. He is a resident of Corleone from childhood.

Benedetto marries Antonina Lupo, daughter of the late ‘’Maestro’’ Pietro Lupo and the living Francesca Triolo, from ‘’Regalis Commenda Peritii’’ (Prizzi), and a resident of Corleone from childhood, on 24 August 1819 in Corleone. His father has died by this time.[1]

Benedetto and Antonina have at least one child, Giovanna (c. 1821), named after her paternal grandmother.

During the cholera epidemic of 1837, the town of Corleone is put under quarantine. Violence erupts, with some people in the town naming others “annointers,” spies sent by the Bourbon king to poison the people of Sicily with cholera.

The historian, Don Giovanni Colletto, names Benedetto Glorietti, aka Dimitri di Biagio, age 35 (b. 1802), from Monreale, among the leaders of one of these mobs who kill so-called "annointers."[2] At least one historian describes the violence that erupted throughout Sicily at this time, as Republican in nature, with the stories of annointers being a thin cover for killing supporters of the king.[3]

There is a death record for Benedetto di Mitri, age 46 (b. 1791), husband of Antonina, who dies on 2 August 1837. His parents' names are not recorded.[4]

Benedetto is executed on this date, along with several others, on the Borgo in Corleone.[2]

Giovanna marries Leoluca Cortimiglia on 28 April 1841.[5]

Giovanna dies, a widow, on 5 March 1878 in the hospital, at age 57 (b. 1821).[6]
