Biography

John Gliddon was born perhaps circa 1739.

He married Agnes Holman, of Hatherleigh, on the 21st of November 1764 in Okehampton, Devon, England^[1]. Banns had been published in both Hatherleigh and Okehampton on the 28th of October, 4th of November, and 11th of November 1764^[2][3]. The Hatherleigh banns record states that John was a woolcomber.

John and Agnes had 3 children:

• Joseph Gliddon, baptised on the 21st of July 1765 in Okehampton.
• John Gliddon, baptised on the 26th of June 1768 in Okehampton.
• Mary Gliddon, baptised on the 8th of December 1776 in Okehampton.

I think the 1749 baptism is the least likely, as it would make him about 15 at his marriage. It was not unheard of for people to marry this young at this time, but it would've been unusual for the groom to be so much younger than the bride (his wife was age 28 at marriage).

John possibly had an earlier wife called Jane. There are some baptisms viewable on FindMyPast for children of a John and Jane Gliddon between 1747 and 1763 in Okehampton. Could these be earlier children of John's?
