Mrs. Ging came to the U.S. because of a law in Switzerland That required poor widows to turn their children over to the state to be placed on farms of persons of better means. A childhood friend and distant cousin, Jacob Wernli, had already moved to Illinois. When he learned that Mrs. Ging was now a widow living in Texas, he moved to Coupland and they were married.
