Biography

Richard was born about 1800. He was the son of David Gilliam and Margaret UNKNOWN. He passed away after 1860.

This Richard has been confused with Richard Gillum, JR, the son of Richard Gillum and Judah who was born bout 1813. Richard Gillum JR married Mary Edwards. Richard the son of David was born about 1803 and married a Nancy.

Supporting evidence: In the 1840 Scott County, VA Census On the same page is Joseph Williams, and Neri Williams (they are the witnesses of David Gilliam’s Will dated 25 Nov 1833) Also on the same page is Richard Gilliam, age 30-40 born between 1800 and 1810. William Sloan Patsy Gilliam, age 60-70, widow of David Gillam).

The 1830 Scott County, VA Census is “alphabetized” and cannot be used to show “neighbors” but Richard Gilliam is listed age 20-30 born between 1800 and 1810.

This Richard is the eldest son of David Gillum. He cannot be Richard Gilliam born 1813.

The Richard born 1813 is found in the 1840 Scott County, VA Census as Richard Gillam, JR, age 20-30, born 1810-1820 Since he is called JR, it implies he is the son of Richard and not David. In 1840 he is listed adjacent James Gilliam, the son of Richard. David did not have a son James per David’s Will.

Richard born 1813 is not found in the 1830 census as he would have been age 17. He is found in his father Richard’s household as male age 15-19.
