John was born in 1944. He passed away in 1966. John the son of Verna E. Hogeland of Oxnard CA and John Gilliam who was deceased, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on April 20, 1962 in Los Angeles CA. He was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
At the Company Command post in Binh Son District, PFC Gilliam was using a Bangalore torpedo to clear a hedgerow to establish a clear field of fire when it exploded. His death resulted from multiple shrapnel wounds.
