Biography

William was born about 1760. He was the son of William Gilliam.

He spent his entire life in St Martin's Parish, Hanover.

He married Elizabeth Martin Barclay. Together they had son John B. Gilliam and daughters, Jane R Gilliam wife of William Hooper Seay, Mary Gilliam and one unknown daughter, possibly the wife of Joseph Z Terrell.

He passed away before 1840 owning 476 acres of land. It appears by 1847, wife Elizabeth has died for William's Estate is listed with 476 acres.

The following year in 1848, the tract of 476 acres has been divided with Mary C Lowry receiving a "Life estate" of 267.5 acres. Joseph Z Terrell owns the other 276.5 acres. Mary C. Lowry appears to be daughter Mary Gilliam who is listed in the 1846 Land Tax with Elizabeth. Note: Lowry's and Terrell's tracts together total 535 acres, not 476.
