Biography

Samson Gilliam was born about 1765 in Bute County, NC since he was of age in 1786 when he cuts a deed with Eli Eley.

The records of Franklin County, North Carolina point to Sampson being a grandson of Walter Gilliam of Southampton County, VA. Since Sampson named his sons Ephraim and Marcus. It is assumed he is one of their sons. He has been attributed to Ephraim.

It has been incorrectly said that Sampson is the son of Joshua Gillam, the son of Robert Gillam. This is incorrect. Sampson had his roots in and around Franklin County, NC. Neither Robert nor Joshua Gillam had connections to this county. Also there are deeds in Franklin County among Sampson and members of the extended Gilliam family including in-laws. Sampson names sons after his father and uncle, Ephraim and Marcus.
