Biography

Flora was born on 31 July 1842 at St James Bristol, and christened on 4 September 1842 at St James, Bristol, Gloucester, England.

In the 1851 Census, Flora was aged 8 and living at Rose Cottage, St Michael, Bristol with her mother Mary (aged 30), older sister Henrietta (aged 10), younger brother Jesse (aged 6), younger brother Henry (aged 4) and a general servant Hester Hills (aged 20).

In about 1859, "At the age of 17 I travelled to Cal Cutta India in one of the finest American ships (my brother in law was commender) also my sister Merle and baby. Such a glorious time. Stayed there several months. The voyage there and back took 9 months - I had my Piano and lovely frocks."

She married Charles Edward Lucy on 18 September 1864 at St Michael the Archangel on the Mount, Gloucestershire.

She appeared to live in Gloucestershire all of her life.

Their children were:

Ellen Mary Lucy, probably born 21 April 1868 in Bristol, christened 12 August 1868 at St Michael the Archangel on the Mount, Bristol.

John Henry Reed Lucy, probably born 1867, christened 12 August 1868.

Henrietta May Lucy, probably born 1868, christened 12 August 1868.

Ernest Edward Lucy, christened 12 August 1868 at St Michael the Archangel on the Mount, Bristol, Gloucestershire. Died between January and March 1869.

Lorena Adelaide Norris Lucy, christened, 12 September 1869 at St Michael the Archangel on the Mount, Bristol, Gloucestershire.

Frederick Lionel Lucy, probably born 1873, christened 9 March 1873.

Olive Marie Lucy, born July 1874 at Bristol.

Alice Maud Lucy, probably born 1877.

George E, M Lucy, probably born 1879.

In the 1881 Census, Flora was 38 and living at Royal Terrace, Portishead, Somerset, England with husband Charles aged 39 who was a Ship Broker. Living with them was daughter Ellen aged 15 (scholar, estimated birth year 1866), John Lucy aged 14 (Scholar, estimated birth year 1867) and son Frederick Lucy aged 8 (Scholar, estimated birth year 1873).

In the 1891 Census, Flora was 48 and living at Portishead, with husband Charles E Lucy (aged 48, Ship Brokers Clerk). Living/staying with them was daughter Lorena A N Radley (aged 21, married), daughter Henrietta Lucy (aged 22, single, estimated birth year 1869), Olive Lucy (aged 16, Scholar, estimated birth year 1875), Alice M Lucy (aged 14, Scholar, estimated birth year 1877) and George E M Lucy (aged 12, Scholar, estimated birth year 1879).

On 21 Sep 1896, Henrietta May was married (aged 28) at St John The Evangelist Church, Clifton to Sherard Augustus Stevens (aged 26).

On 10 November 1896, Olive Marie was married (aged 22) at St John the Evangelist Church, Clifton, Gloucester to Bertram Rose Lambert (aged 21). Olive liked travelling; 1 Sep 1922 to Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies on the "Ingoma" from London (Harrison Direct Line); on 19 Jan 1925 to Kingston, Jamaica from Bristol on the "Cavina" (Elders & Fyffes Ltd).

In the 1901 Census (31 March), Flora was 57 and living at Downfield Road, Clifton with husband Charles Ed Lucy (aged 59, birth est 1842, Hanly Castle, Worcestershire), Ship Broker's Clerk). Also living/staying at the house was daughter Alice M Lucy (aged 23, single), daughter Olive M Lambert (26, married), grandson Frederick Lambert (aged O), grand-daughter Elfrida A Radley (aged 6, born about 1895 at Guilford, Surrey), grand-daughter Frances Radley (aged 5, born about 1896 at Inkpen, Berkshire) and servant Agnes H Grant (aged 27).

On 29 March 1902, daughter Alice Maud (aged about 25) was married at St John the Evangelist, Clifton to Harold Moxey.

In the 1911 Census, Flora Theodora Marie Lucy (widowed, aged 65/69) was living at Clifton, Bristol, Gloucestershire with her daughter Olive Marie Lambert (aged 36, married), son-in-law Bertram Rose Lambert (aged 36, born est. 1875 in Georgetown, occupation Private Means) and grandson Frederick Randolph Lambert (aged 10, born about 1901 at Port, Devonshire), School).

On 8 May 1920, her daughter Ellen (resident of Canada) died, aged 52.

Flora passed away in 1925 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, aged about 81. She is buried at Canford Cemetery, Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, England.
