Biography

Joseph was born about 1821. He passed away in Clarendon, South Australia during 1897.

Joseph married Sarah Howitt in England prior departing for South Australia on 27th December 1848.

After Sarah's death in 1878, Joseph married Maria Radford (nee Coward) in Norwood, South Australia on 29 September 1880.[1]

Joseph died in Clarendon, South Australia on 11 January 1897 at the age of 76 years. [2] The following death notice was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Express and Telegraph, on 11Janaury 1897:[3]

GILLARD.—On the 11th January, at his residence, the Clarendon Vineyard, Clarendon, Joseph Gillard, in his 77th year.

Joseph was buried at Clayton Church Cemetery (now called Clayton-Wesley Uniting Church Cemetery) in Kensington, South Australia on 12 January 1897.[4]

The following obituary was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Advertiser , on 12 January 1897:[5]

DEATH OF AN OLD COLONIST.
Clarendon, January 11.
Mr. Joseph Gillard died at 4 a.m. to-day at the age of 76 years. The deceased had been ailing for some time, but about a month ago he improved wonderfully. He was taken ill again 10 days ago and after great suffering succumbed as stated. The funeral will take place on Tuesday afternoon. Deceased leaves a widow, two sons (Mr. Joseph Gillard, of Magill, and Mr. William H. Gillard, of Norwood), and two daughters, Mrs. E. Jaffrey and Mrs. David Thomson. The late Mr. Gillard was born at Oakhampton, Devonshire, and arrived in Australia by the ship David Malcolm in April, 1849. On landing he went to reside at Norwood, where he purchased land. In 1851 be went to the Victoria diggings, where be was fairly successful. He was associated there with Thomas Hardy, and returned to Norwood and planted his land with vines. He named the Sylvania vineyard, and followed the occupation of a vigneron. Since his marked success he resided there till he bought the Clarendon vineyard in 18S2. He had medals and diplomas from all parts of the world. In 1861 he took all the prizes at the show of the Vinegrowers' Association in Adelaide. He was a member of the wine committee of the Royal Agricultural Society from 1871 to 1891, when he resigned in favor of his son. He was also a member of the Vinegrowers' Association. The Clarendon vineyard comprises 38 acres of vines in full bearing. When he bought it the first year produced 3,500 gallons of wine. Three years after it produced 23.500 gallons, the marked increase being due to his practical knowledge of vine culture. The deceased planted 25 acres of fruit trees which are now in full bearing. For many years be was connected with the Philharmonic Society in Adelaide, and acted as leader of the Bible Christian choir at Clarendon. He took no active part in local or political matters.
