I was born in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence County in the area of New York State known as The North Country. My parents were Walter Leo and Shirley Irene Northrup Gilbert. This was a troubling time for my family as my brother had been killed just 19 days earlier in a tragic accident while playing. My brother Donald had wanted me to be named "Robert", and thus I was. I am Robert Donald Gilbert.
Many years later I sat sharing photos and memories with my Mom while she was in the hospital. We had a great time. At the end she told me to take the family photos and other items of family history and keep them safe. Share them with the family. That was practically our last words together. I hope she would approve of my efforts.
I am not new to genealogy but neither am I a pro. I have worked on my family's history now for six years, off and on, and have had a lot of help from my cousins. My Dad's side of the family is mainly French Canadian with a little Norwegian thrown in. My Mom's is New England ancestry and have been in North American since the mid 1620's. I am a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and have identified a number of direct Patriot Ancestors that fought in that war. I have been a volunteer for Find-A-Grave for over 7 years and have always been a history buff. I have tested autosomal, mt-DNA, and Y-DNA. I have taken many genetics classes while in graduate school.
I currently live in Tempe, Arizona, USA.

You've been a member for about a week so I thought I would check in to see how it's going. Have the How-Tos been helpful or left you with questions? Most of us have questions after all that information!

I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.
I am here to help answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a name back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site
