Biography

• Maynard Emerson Giffin, was born March 14, 1883, the son of Obed Chute and Theodozia Bezanson Giffin of Isaac's Harbour.^{[1] [2]}. In some references he appears as Emerson Maynard and he signed his military record E. Giffin, but this is how it appears on his birth certificate. Similarly, his father was often referred to as 'Chute'.
• He was worked as a tailor.
• On September 30, 1908, he married Ida Levy, born circa 1887^[3], the daughter of Ephraim and Alice Express Levy of Tancook Island, Nova Scotia^[4], a resident of Spryfield NS; and had children (some are noted in his military record), including

1. Ernest Brenton Giffen, born June 9, 1909^[5], who married Adeline Osborne in 1934 ^[6], and died December 22, 1997^[7]
2. Ralph Waldo Emerson Giffen, born August 10, 1910^[8], who died in 2002^[9]
3. Erma S. Giffen, born January 4,1912^[10], who married William Chester Sawler in 1936^[11]

• He enlisted in 246th Reserve Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on March 15, 1917^[16], and was considered for Class D service (he had no vision in his left eye, but was instead medically discharged in May 1917.
