Biography

Elizabeth was baptized at East Middletown (Portland), Hartford County, Connecticut in 1734. Her parents are Ebenezer Gibbs and Ruth (Bates) Gibbs. ^[1]

Elizabeth's husband John Cornwall wrote his Last Will in April 1808 at Granville, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He died in February 1809. His bequests to his wife Elizabeth were: use of the homestead during her life, cows, sheep, a horse, and household furniture. He also left bequests to nine children. ^[2]

Research Notes

I cannot find a good source for Elizabeth's last name at birth. I've searched for a birth record with no success. Resolved: I found the Vital Records for Portland (formerly East Middletown) at Ancestry. Elizabeth's baptism recorded her father's name. Brawley-55 00:29, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

The marriage records cited below from Family Search are for an Elizabeth Smith marrying a John Cornell. The sources are typed. So they are not original. Resolved: I found a register of vital records in Middletown, Connecticut, wherein the family records are grouped together. The names of the children of John and Elizabeth (Smith) Cornwell are different than the names recorded in the Last Will of John Cornwall. Also, the two husbands died 20 years apart. So I created two new profiles: John (Cornell) Cornwell (abt.1730-1789) and his wife Elizabeth (Smith) Cornwell (abt.1735-). Brawley-55 00:29, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

Ebenezer Gibbs and Ruth Bate had a son named Ozias Gibbs. So, Elizabeth naming a son Ozias Cornwall suggests that Elizabeth, Ebenezer, Ruth, and the elder Ozias are family. Brawley-55 22:21, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
