He was born about 1631 (?) [1] and according Maryland records he was born in /or from Amersfoort. [2] He very likely is the (Rutger Gerritsz =Rutger son of a man named Gerrit) in Maryland named Rutgertson Garrets, who died in 1679 (the widow was named Somelia). Rutger(tson) Garrets is assumed to be the son of Gerrit Rutten (also Ruttzn) b. ca. 1625 (?) Note: if Rutger(tson) was born abt 1631 father probably was born abt. 1605; whose will made or proved on 08 March 1664, Maryland) (father was married to Mary (Fendall))

Research Notes
The family probably is based on the info from this online genealogy?
Rugert(son) (probably was named Rutger after his paternal grandfather!) Garretts(on) 1651–1678 Married 1672 Baltimore, Maryland, British Colonial America, Somelia Bedell 1652–Deceased. Three Childrenof Somelia Bedell and Rugertson Garrettson Jr.
Rebecca Garretson 1665–1709
Garrett Garrettson 1673–1738
Margaret Garrettson
The above is from this online genealogy Rugertson (Rutger?) Garretson (Garrets, Gerrits) It includes the info about the (bogus/based on just the name Gerrit ?) connection with Gerrit van Rijn)
When Margaret Garrettson was born in 1665, in Back River, Baltimore, Maryland, British Colonial America, her father, Rutten (Rutger/Rutgertson) Garrett, was 34 and her mother, Mary Marritje Fendall, was 36. She married William W. Osborn II before June 1685, in Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland, British Colonial America. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 2 daughters. She died after 1705, in Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland, British Colonial America, at the age of 41. [1]Note If this information is correct, Gerrit Rutten was born in 1631....

As there are really no sources, except the "ancestry family trees" more research will have to be done to find the connection from Delaware to Maryland where Rutgerson met Somelia.
From New Castle, Delaware to Middletown, Maryland is a short 122 miles by wagon. So this could be the LINK to his famly...
Additional Research Notes
YES, to the America's it would be a UNIQUE name but not in the Netherlands
It still needs a lot of sources/research and no baptism or other prove showing who his parents really were yet, so parents are marked uncertain for now... It also looks like there's just a lot of confusion about the patronymics, if someone was a son of a man named Gerrit his patronymic would be Gerritsz or Gerrits(en) (Garrets) the later descendants, when everyone officially had to adopt a last name, probably adopted the patronymic of their deeper ancestor and that's how eventually it became the last name Garretson ? Some online info named him 'Rugertson Garretson', Maryland records show his name as Rutgertson Garrets. All the info including that father perhaps was a son of Gerrit van Rijn, brother of Rembrandt van Rijn seems to come from this online genealogy but it all seems to be based on no sources at all + confusion about patronymics and mixed up wifes and children. (Rutger according the online info had a sister named Margaret too so Mary Fendall probably was not Rutgers wife, but might have been his and mother or perhaps a 2nd wife of father ?

Doesn't it seem unlikely that this person was born in 1631, as suggested in the FamilySearch profile for Margaret Garrettson, if that was 14 years before the marriage of his presumed parents?
