Willem Gerritsz Kouwenhoven was born about 1580, and married to Neeltje Willems. They had five children; Gerrit, Willem (de Oude), Harmen, Jan, Willem (de Jonge). Willem in 1619-1620 was tenant of the Kouwenhoven farm and it's possible his father was before him, but Willem is mentioned in 1619/20 in a register for payments of Dyke maintenance of the Eem in the mill archive. The size of Kouwenhoven at this time was 23 morgen. The family also bought a piece of land next to the Kouwenhoven land, a field of at least 1 morgen in 't Halloo named de Riet. Willem died short before or in 1622. (Brother Wolfert and Herman Willemsz (Teut) (probably a brother of mother Neeltje) were appointed as guardians of the children and Jan de WIjs (sr) was appointed as momber (supervise guardian)). Neeltje remarried in 1622 Peter Koenen, son of Koenraad Jacobs and Teuntje Rijks. Peter died before 1636, and mother Neeltje handed over the rent and inboedel (household effect, goods) of Kouwenhoven to her son Jan Willemsz Kouwenhoven, who in that year married Nelletje Hendricks, daughter of Hendrik WIllems and Geertje Willems. Mother Neeltje remarried in 1638 Jan Rijksz, innkeeper of the Tolick[1]
1622, November 5: Wolphert was appointed guardian over the five under aged children of Willem Gerritsz Couwenhoven. Wulffer Geridtz, bleacher residing by the Coppelpoort and Harman Willemsz citizen of Amersfoort as "bloetvoochden" (blood guardians) of the five sons of Willem Gerridsz Couwenhoven, namely Gerridt; Willem; Jan; Harmen; and Willem the Younger, none of whom had yet reached the age of majority, made an agreement with the mother of the children Neeltgen Willemsdr the widow of Willem Gerridtsz assisted by the owner of Cowenhoven the honorable Johan de Wijs.[4]This document indicates that Wolfert Gerritse had a brother Willem and that he was the tenant of the farm Couwenhoven which was owned by Johan de Wijs.[5] Son of the in the above mentioned honorable Jan de Wijs (Sr), Jan de WIjs (jr) was married to Goutgen (Aurelia) van Rensel(a)er, so it's possible that since Wolfert van Kouwenhoven met Jan de Wijs (Sr) already in 1622, and because Jan also was from Nijkerk, the family came in contact with Killiaen van Renselaer and this led to the emigration of Wolphert Gerritsz (van Kouwenhoven).
↑ This document indicates that Wolfert is connected to the Couwenhoven by Hoogland. It is at the same time possible that he was also linked to the Couwenhoven near Woudenberg because he was a son of Gerrit Willemsz van Couwenhoven, but documentation for this has not been discovered.
