Biography

Children: Jan.

It seems Derch was not originally a Hasselman. His brother Henrick bought the property named Hassele in the Nettelhorst area by 1610 and later Derch came to help with it. Since it seems that Henrick's children either didn't survive or moved elsewhere, it was Derch's son who inherited the property. They did something that was very common back then: they took their last name from their property. Therefore it was an unrelated family that went by the last name of Hassele or Hasselman before 1610.

These records could refer either to Derck or his brother Henrick: Hasselmann from Nettelhorst: Children: Truikenn (Oct 26 1617, witness Eylejkamp), child (Feb 1620, witness Bouwhuijs).

Derch op 't Hasseler married Jenneken Velthues (Velthuis). After Derch died, Jenneken married Johan Kornegoer from de Bushurne on Dec 31 1626. This document is the only one we have that mentions both of them; the names of their son Jan's children suggest they are his parents. Since I found no marriage record from 1608 to 1626 for them, I'm assuming Jenneken was an older widow in 1626. It would seem that Derch was a younger brother of Henrick who joined him there or took over for him.

There is a property listed in the Pondschatting of 1576 called Dat Hasselep in Nettelhorst. It's quite possible that this is the Hasseler property. No one was named with it.

I tried to find Derck and Jenneken in the baptism and marriage records. There were 3 couples with these names: Derck Mengers, Kelholt and Sticker. Only Derck Kelholt had a child named Jan. And his wife Jenneken died around 1614. So he then married Aeltken in 1615. So I suspect our Derck and Jenneken were married and had their children in Geesteren (records don't start there until 1650). Or their children may have been born between 1596 and 1607, when Lochem vital records are lost.

The name Hasselman suddenly appears in Nettelhorst in 1617 with the baptism of Truijken. At this point baptism records were poorly kept, and no other information is given. At the same time, after one mention of being a baptism witness in 1620, Henrick Hasseler disappears. Is it possible that Derck came to Nettelhorst from Geesteren somewhere around 1617 and eventually replaced Henrick in working at Hasseler, taking on the last name of Hasselman (the "man" who lives at Hasseler)?

It seems that the family house / farm was in Nettelhorst, between Lochem and Zutphen. Many people with the surname Hasselman / Hasselmans come from Nettelhorst. There was a castle in Nettelhorst where the lord Walraven van Heckeren (1570 - 1645) and his son Evert van Heckeren (1612 - 1680) lived. They played rather prominently in the politics of the area. Hendrick and Jan would have been tenants of his farms in Nettelhorst. It seems several families worked under the lords van Heckeren.

Different parts of Nettelhorst seem to have different names such as Swickeler, de Hofstede and de Kempenste. It seems people sometimes took their last names from where they lived. Therefore it would make sense that Hendrick and Derch op het Hasselaer (Hasseler) would take on the last name of Hasselman. Other names may show a relation to our Hasselmans - Hasseloe, Hasselers, Hassink. Two of these names may simply show that names beginning with Hass were quite common in the area - considering they did not come from Nettelhorst. But the marriage records of both Jenneke and Reijnt Hasselman in the last 1660's make it clear that Jan Hasselman was from Nettelhorst. The name Hasselers is from Nettelhorst, and is probably the name of the part of the estate the family lived on. In which case, the name Hasselman means "the man who lives in Hasseler".

There are 3 instances of the name Hasseler being used in the late 1600's in Lochem. The only instance we have of a Mette Hasselers is found in 1666; Rutger is also referred to as Rutger op 't Hasselaer in 1686 in the marriage of a daughter. In April 1693 Jan Hasseler (presumably Dercksz) in Nettelhorst baptized a son Henrick. These last 2 would "prove" that Hasseler and Hasselman are in fact the same name.

Most vital records of Lochem are from 1582 to 1596, 1608 to 1622 / 1627 and from 1665 on. Therefore there are some rather big gaps in the generations. It's possible Derch's records would be found during the first period of missing records. And the marriages and the baptisms of Jan and his children would have happened during the 2nd period (over 30 years worth) of missing records. The earliest generations of this genealogy are built on what would make the most sense according to the records we have.
