John Philip Geisler was the son of Johannes Nicholas and Johannetha Maria Barbara Neber (Geissler) Geisler, christened October 12, 1825 in Sippersfeld, Pfalz, Bavaria, Deutschland at the Evangelische Kirche Sippersfeld. By 1850 he and his parents, and siblings were settled in Lawrence Township, Lawrence County Illinois. He was a cooper. He married Elizabeth Ann Ruark, the daughter of Reason Pumpery and Mary Jane (Banks) Ruark, on March 25, 1852 in Richland County, Illinois.
John Philip became the minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church known as Hopewell Church. He and his wife were charter members meeting in first different people’s homes, and later in a log cabin built in a thicket just behind the present Hopewell church building. Among the other charter members were surnames of Keneipp, Mackrill, Corrie, Brian, Ruark, French, Peters, Turner, Brothers, and Ruby. Of the 29 charter members, 14 are buried at Moffett Cemetery.
By 1860 John and Elizabeth were living in Lukin township, Lawrence County Illinois and they had four children, Jacob, John, Hennerette, and Mary. His father’s family lived next door. By 1870 they had three more children, Resow, Euplaney, and William F.; ten years later, these last three were still living at home.
Death records at Lawrence County Courthouse, Lawrenceville, Illinois stated that he died December 8 1883, at age 57 years, 3 months, 27 days. The cause of death was meningeal tuberculosis, (tuberculous of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord). He was buried at Moffett Cemetery Lawrence County Illinois also known as the Hopewell church cemetery.
