Biography

Known as Henry in the United States, he was born Heinrich Jodoc Ludwig Geisler (possibly Geiseler) to parents Franz Geiseler and Maria Albers.^[1]

There are limited sources to tie this birth record to Henry in America, but his parents were given in a Catholic church record of his marriage: Henricus, child of Franciscus Geisler & Maria Albers, married Maria Emerson on 6 December 1893 in St. Boniface, Quincy, Illinois, United States.^[2] Ignoring the artificial Latinization of the names, these names match the birth record. A civil version of the marriage record does not include parents, but does show Henry Geisler marrying Mary Emerson on 6 Dec 1893 in Adams county, Illinois.^[3]

By 1900 Henry and Mary had 3 children. Henry immigrated in 1889, had been in the United States 10 years, and was naturalized. Both Henry and Mary had parents from Germany. Names in the table are spelled as transcribed online.^[4]

The 1910 census adds daughter, Juanita, age 11/12, born in Utah. The family was in Big Cottonwood, Salt Lake, Utah. Mary shows 4 children born and 4 living in 16 years of marriage. This matches the Mary from 1910, but now her parents are from New York and Maine.^[5]

A final son, George H., age 6 was born in Idaho, according the the 1920 census which found Henry, Mary and their youngest daughter in Jerome, Idaho. Now Mary's parents are simply from the U. S.^[6]

The family was in Los Angeles, California in 1930. Fred (Fritz in 1900) had rejoined them.^[7]

Henry died (age 77) on 2 February 1946 in Los Angeles, California, United States. A birth date of 26 Nov 1868 was listed. The informant was Juanita Westbrook, his daughter.^{[8] [9]}

Research Notes

Records for Mary Emerson before her marriage to Henry have been elusive. Most records are consistent in giving that last name, but the birthplace of her parents is reported several ways. The death record of son Fred L. Geisler shows his mother's name as Emmering. There are no obvious records for Mary Emmering born in New York at the right time, but it is plausible that Emerson was not her birth name.
