Jean Nicolas Geisler was born in Henriville, Alsace-Lorraine, France[1]
located between Saarbruecken and Metz 25 November 1865, the son of Henri Sebastian Geisler and Anne Marie Gondolff.[2]
At age 18, seeing someone get mistreated, and not wanting to suffer the same, John decided to emigrate to America instead.
On his way to Oregon by stagecoach, he stayed overnight, probably in Nevada. In the morning, preparing to leave, the stagecoach driver dropped the heavy wooden trunk on John's toe and broke it. He had two choices: ride on the stagecoach with a broken toe and get it looked at later, or buy a new ticket. He chose to buy a new ticket and continue his trip the next day. (Nowadays that stagecoach company would have been sued for a lot of money!)
He worked in the gold fields, in Sumpter, Oregon. After the gold was mostly played out, John became a rancher, and lived in John Day.
On 28 December 1897 John married Catherine Wolfinger, by a Baptist minister named George Ellis.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9]
