Mary Ann was the daughter of William and Ann Gee. She married Arthur Holben, and they had eight children. In the fall of 1899, Arthur and his brother Herb staked out land near Ponoka, Alberta. In 1901, the rest of the family came out, and they settled on the NE quarter of 27. During the summer of 1901 a real estate agent, C.C. Reed, was visiting one afternoon and mentioned in the conversation that he thought the place should named it Grand Meadows Ranch, thus it was. They moved into town in 1926, when they sold the ranch.
