John was born in 1815. He was the son of Alexander Gavin and Catherine Davidson.
He was Christened on 29 June 1821 at Garvock, Kincardine, Scotland[1].
John emigrated from England to Natal, South Africa under the scheme run by Joseph Byrne on the Ship Globe. The migrants were known as the Byrne Settlers. Also on the ship were David and George Gavin, possibly his brothers.
He married Jane Hillary on 5 August 1859 in D'Urban, Natal, by Licence[2]. John was aged 38, an Engineer; Jane was aged 34. The witnesses were James Gavin, David Gavin, John Hillary and Sarah Lennox.
They had four sons, three of whom died in infancy.
John passed away in 1875 at the age of 55[3]. Cause of death was recorded as "Scalded to death".
