Claude was born around 1677. He was the son of Pierre Gaudet and Anne Blanchard.[1]
In 1686, at Port Royal, Claude, aged 9, was living with his parents, Pierre GAUDET, aged 35, and Anne BLANCHARD, aged 41, and half-sibling Giraud [sic], aged 20, and six siblings: Bernard, aged 13, Pierre, aged 11, Abraham, aged 7, Marie, aged 4, Magdelaine [sic], aged 4, and Jeanne, aged 2. They were living on 4 arpents of cultivable land with 10 hogs.[2]
In 1693, at Port Royal, Claude, aged 15, was living with his parents, Pierre GODET [sic], the elder, aged 41, and Anne BLANCHARD, aged 48, and his eight siblings: Bernard, aged 19, Pierre, aged 17, Abraham, aged 13, Madeleine, twin, aged 11, Marie, twin, aged 11, Jeanne, aged 9, Augustine [sic], aged 7, and Jean, aged 3. The family owned 3 guns and was living on 20 arpents of cultivable land with 10 cattle, 12 sheep, and 10 pigs.[3]
Claude (22) married Marguerite Belou (19) (born in 1680 in Beaubassin, Acadie, Nouvelle-France; daughter of Jacques Blou and Marie Girouard) around 1700 in Beaubassin, Acadie. Their known children were:
In 1703 the couple was residing in Beaubassin with one son. [4] They were recorded again in Beaubassin with their growing family in 1707 [5] and 1714. [6] In 1714 the widow Blou, Marguerite's mother, was living with them.
In 1750 Claude and Marguerite were residing at La Butte, one of the villages of Beaubassin. [7] There were no children in the household. That year, the villages in Beaubassin were burned down by the French and their allies to prevent its use by the enemy, forcing Acadians to move northward to villages on the other side of the Mésagouèche River, in French controlled territory. By 1752 they were refugees in Ouescaque (now Westcock, New Brunswick), with 4 boys and 5 girls in the family home. [8] They were recorded again as refugees in Ouescaque in 1755, without children. [9][10]
Claude passed away after the census of 1754-1755. It is believed that they escaped deportation by fleeing to Ile Saint-Jean or Camp Espérance on the Miramichi. [10]
