Biography

Mary Garrison was the daughter of John Garrison and Hannah (Unknown). [Some incorrectly say her mother was a Hannah Oliphant .]

Mary Garrison married Joseph Kitchen, son of Henry Kitchen and Anne Wheeler, some time between 1752 and 1754, (an estimate based on when her first children were born). Mary Garrison is often confused with Samuel's wife whose name was also Mary.

Mary Garrison and Joseph Kitchen had three to four children during their marriage. Their names and vital dates were:

  • Rebecca (?), born abt. 1754/55, possibly married John Rice abt. 1775.
  • John, born 25 Mar 1756, died 18 May 1818. Married Susanna Bird.
  • Esther, born 05 OCT 1758, died 17 NOV 1830. Married Jesse Dalrymple.
  • Joseph, born 20 OCT 1763, died 09 APR 1835. Married Hannah Garrison (uncertain), Catherine Wycoff and Catrina/Catherine Gulick in that order.

One of Mary's daughters, Esther, is named after John Garrison's daughter Esther. An interesting story about John's daughter Esther (also called Hester) was reported by Anger (1993) in his book's section on Mary's husband Joseph Kitchen. John Garrison and his daughter Mary accused the Rev. Morton that he fathered Esther's baby. Parishioners wrote a letter of support for Rev. Morton and documented that the keys to the parsonage house has been confiscated owing to the Garrisons ' arrangements and the locks changed on the house so that Rev Morton could not enter it.

Anger's book specifies that Henry Kitchen's son Joseph and his wife Mary moved from Hunterdon County, New Jersey to Sussex County, New Jersey. Mary and Joseph were living in Sussex, Sussex, New Jersey at the time of his death on 25 NOV 1763. Mary died in 1774 in Mansfield Township, Sussex, New Jersey.

Research Notes

Researchers have claimed that Samuel’s wife was Mary Garrison, but Mary Garrison, daughter of John Garrison and Hannah Oliphant, was married to Joseph Kitchen, not Samuel.

Children of Joseph & Mary were: Rebecca (1755), John (1756), Esther (1758), and Joseph (1763). http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.kitchen/1600.2/mb.ashx
