Alice Belle Garrigus was a pioneer of the Pentecostal church in Newfoundland and was the founding mother of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Newfoundland. She was an example of both Pentecostalism's early egalitarian approach to leadership in ministry, and the central role women have filled in the spread of the Pentecostal movement from its nascent years.
Garrigus was born on August 2, 1858, in Rockville Connecticut. She was raised in the Episcopal Church and later became a member of the Congregation Church. She studied for three years at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary---later Holyoake College---but didn't graduate. She then spent most of her early career as a school teacher. Answering the call to ministry in her later adult years, she became an itinerant preacher for the Congregation Church[1][2].
In 1907 she experienced the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and joined the Pentecostal Movement. She continued her preaching and the following year, Garrigus felt the call of God to minister in Newfoundland. In December 1910, at the age of 52, Garrigus traveled from the United States to St. John's, Newfoundland, with William D. Fowler and Julia E Fowler, a retired missionary couple. The following year, the Fowlers experienced medical problems and left Newfoundland.
Garrigus continued to lead the Mission, which had a local focus and a slowly growing congregation. An evangelistic campaign in 1919 led by Victoria Booth-Clibborn Demarest was the turning point for the Mission as it became the center point for both the spread of Pentecostalism on the island, and for the establishment of the Pentecostal Assemblies of God in 1925.
Garrigus spent the rest of her life in Newfoundland engaged in the Pentecostal ministry she had founded. She remained single, but had a foster daughter, Nellie Mahoney, who lived with her in Connecticut, and followed her to Newfoundland. In her later years, she retired to Clarke’s Beach, in rural Newfoundland, where she lived in a house she called Rehoboth. She died on August 30, 1949.
