When he was 16, his mother requested that her family be accepted into the Society of Friends following some scandalous behavior on the part of his eldest brother, Isaac. William's parents began attending Quaker meetings, and throughout his life, he was an active member of the Quaker community, participating in initiatives that aligned with their values, such as social reform and the abolition of slavery.
During the British occupation of Philadelphia in the Revolutionary War, William's horses were confiscated by the British. His brother Samuel Jr. and their father Samuel Sr. were accused of spying for the British, but both were ultimately acquitted.In 1771, he married Mary Mitchell in a Quaker ceremony and they had five children:
Mary died in 1785 and on May 1, 1787, he married his second wife, Hannah Briggs. Together they raised eight more children:
From 1779 to 1785, William co-owned a brewery with Hugh Roberts. Later, he followed in his brother Edward's footsteps as a carpenter, although the role would be more akin to today's property development. Edward become one of the wealthiest men in Philadelphia. In addition to William's work as a carpenter, he also served as a surveyor for an insurance company in 1795.
