1860 Census: Elizabeth Gray, age 42, lived in Arena, Iowa, Wisconsin, with her husband, Jefferson, 42, and their children, James, 12, and Thomas, 4. Also in the home was Hannah Woodward, 37. Jefferson had a personal estate of $250. All family members were born in England. Hannah was born in Wisconsin. [4]
1870 Census:; Elizabeth Gray, age 52, lived in Arena, Iowa, Wisconsin, with her husband, Jefferson, 51, and their children, Thomas, 14; William, 9; and James, 22. Jefferson's occupation was farmer, and James was a teamster. Jefferson had real estate valued at $700, and a personal estate of $300. Jefferson, Elizabeth, and James were born in England. Thomas and William were born in Wisconsin. All checked parents as of foreign birth. All family members checked could not read or write. Thomas and Wiliam attended school. [5]
