Biography

Mae (Gargus) Sellers was an Arkansan.

Grace was born on March 10, 1900, in Arkansas, to Thomas and Mary Gargus. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Grace was enumerated for the federal census on April 29 or 30, 1910. She was 10 years old at this time, and was living with parents Thomas and Mary, and sisters Elsie, Hester, and Pearl, in South Fork Township, Fulton County, Arkansas. She was attending school. [1]

On December 29, 1917, Grace was married to Arnold Boyt in Jefferson County, Arkansas, when she was 17 years old. [6]

Grace was enumerated for the federal census on January 5, 1920. She was 19 years old at this time, and was living with husband Arnold, daughter A.E., son William, mother-in-law Margaret, sister-in-law Rosie Pipkins, niece Ludie Pipkins, and nephews Euclid and John Ussery, in Jefferson Township, Jefferson County, Arkansas. She was noted to be able to read and write. [2]

Grace was enumerated for the federal census on March 31, 1930. She was 30 years old at this time, and was living with husband Arnold, and children A.E., William, and Helen, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. [3]

Arnold was murdered on December 19, 1931, and at some point after that she was remarried, to Major Saint. Major died on April 1, 1935. At some point after that, she must have been remarried to an unknown Smith, as this is given as her surname on her marriage license for her fourth marriage, this time to Harry Sellers, on October 22, 1943, in Clark County, Washington. She was 43 years old by the time of her marriage to Sellers. Her obituary mentions her having been widowed by Arnold Boyt and Major Saint, but no Smith is mentioned, so presumably that marriage ended in divorce. [4] [5] [7] [8]

Grace has not been located on the 1940 or 1950 censuses.

Grace died on July 11, 1991, in Germantown, Tennessee. She was buried on July 13, 1991, in Memorial Park Cemetery in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Her obituary gives her surname as Hoyt-Sellers, while her headstone uses Hoyt-Saint, so it's not clear what last name she was using at her time of death. [5]
