Charles Overend Garbutt was born at Stockton, County Durham, England in 1850. He was the second son of Thomas Garbutt and Jane Overend.[1][2]

Charles was a North Queensland Pastoralist who established a Butchering firm. He also ventured into mining. His sons established Garbutt Bros Butchery in Townsville.

In 1901, Charles wrote for the Wild River Times an account of his journey overland from Tirabella Station (near Mount Garnet) to Ebagoolah (60km north of Yarraden), via Herberton, Mareeba, crossing the Mitchell, Palmer, and Laura Rivers, Butcher's Hill Station (now Lakeland), another Laura crossing, and Laura township.[7] His route appears to have followed roughly the course of modern State Highway 81 (Mulligan Highway/Penninsula Developmental Road). He did some prospecting along the way, and described visits with friends, delays due to high water, and observations of the nature and condition of the land through which he passed.

He passed away near Herberton, Queensland, Australia in 1905.[8] Newspaper accounts of Charles's death place it either on Courtney's Creek[9] or Cassowary Creek.[10] Courtney's Creek was perhaps another name for Cassowary Creek, or a tributary of Cassowary Creek. A man named Courtney had an establishment in the area.[11] Less than two weeks after Charles's death, a promising tin deposit was reported there.[12]
