Charles was born on 7 February 1891 at Murphy's Creek, Queensland, Australia. He was the son of Patrick Gallagher and Kate Buchannan. [1]

He attended school at Laidley, Queensland, Australia. On leaving school he worked as a labourer.

His father Patrick passed away in . His mother Catherine Glover and stepfather Henry Glover had moved to Cooran on the North Coast line when Charles enlisted in the A.I.F. on the 17 January 1916. Catherine was given as his next of kin.

Charles served in France where he was wounded in action on the 4 October 1917. While recovering in England in January 1918 he was docked three days pay for failing to salute an officer.

He returned to Australia aboard the "Ypringa" 15 May 1919 and was discharged on 5 July 1919. [2]

He married Florence Maud Lee on 13 February 1920 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. [3] He had met Florence in England while he was recovering from his wounds.

Following unsuccessful attempts to grow bananas in Cooran region, he and his family went to New Guinea.

With the outbreak of WWII he enlisted on 22 February 1943 as a Corporal and was discharged a Sergeant on 5 May 1946 serving in New Guinea. Medals included: British War Medal, Victory Medal, War Medal and Australian Service Medal.

He passed away in 1957 at Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

He was buried at Port Moresby General Cemetery, Port Moresby, National Capital District, National Capital, Papua New Guinea. [4]

NOTICE is hereby given that, after the expiration of fourteen days from the publication hereof, application will be made to this Honourable Court that probate of the will of the above-named Charles William Richard Gallaher, deceased, may be granted to Norman Alexander White of Port Moresby in the Territory of Papua, Solicitor, the duly appointed attorney of Florence Maud Gallaher (in the said will called Florence Maud Gallagher) the sole executor named in the said will. Any person interested who desires to object to the application, or to be heard upon it, may file a caveat in the Registry at any time before the grant is made.
