Except as otherwise footnoted, the following adapted from Seward County Kansas.[1]
Anslem Boyd Fullmer was born 13 Nov 1877 at Ayersville, Ohio, an unincorporated part of Defiance County, the son of David and Mary Belle (Brodnix) Fullmer.[2] Boyd grew up in Defiance County, Ohio, attended Defiance College, and came to Seward County, Kansas in 1904 to a soldier's homestead claim, provided for his service in the Spanish-American War, seven miles east of Liberal, Kansas near what became the town of Hayne in 1910. On 4 May 1904, Boyd married Anna Marie Cavannaugh at Hamler, Ohio and the couple returned to Kansas. Boyd's claim was proved in 1909.[3]
Boyd farmed and taught school at Hayne for eight years. He also taught Sunday school in Hayne. In 1912, the was elected Seward County Superintendent of Public Instruction serving until 1917 when he joined Sinclair Oil Company. After working in Liberal, Kansas for two years he and his family moved to Elkhart, Kansas for eighteen years before taking another job with Sinclair which kept him on the road until retirement in 1941 (one source says 1937) at which time he moved to Paulding, Ohio.
Like most early Kansas homesteaders, the Fullmer's lived in a primitive dugout depending on quail, prairie chicken and rabbit for meat. In winter game would be dressed and buried in snowdrifts to keep it for a few days. Early recreation often took the form of baseball and Boyd managed the Hayne team.
Anna Marie passed away in 1934 and is interred at the Liberal Cemetery. Boyd married second Elizabeth Kahler. Boyd passed away 23 Jul 1966 at Defiance, Ohio and is interred at the Riverside Cemetery, Defiance, Ohio.[4]
