Biography

Flora was born in 1891 in Chelmsford, Essex.[1]

Flora was the daugter of James Fulcher (~1846 - 1931) and Fanny (Oddy) Fulcher (~1851 - 1931).

1901 Census on the 31st March 1901 Flora was living at 14 Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex with her parents James and Fanny, and her siblings Oswald, Agnes and Jessica.[2]

According to the Chelmsford Chronicle, 21st July 1905, at the recent examination of the London College of Music, Miss Flora Fulcher, a pupil of Miss Warren, has successfully passed, with honours, in the senior divison.[3]

In the 13th April 1906 edition of Chelmsford Chronicle, Flora Fulcher was noted as being a kind pianist, accompanying the London Road Sunday School Gymnastic Class group since its inauguration.[4]

According to the Essex Newsman newspaper, Flora was a bridesmaid at her sister Jessica Dorcas' wedding in 1908. The wedding was described in the Essex Newsman - Saturday 1st February 1908:

The Wedding took place at the London Road Congregational Church, on Wednesday, of Mr. Charles Collin Choat, eldest son of Mr. Charles Wm. Choat, of Mildmay Road, with Miss Jessica Dorcas Fulcher, sixth daughter of Mr. James Fulcher of Duke Street. Rev. T. M. Mundle officiated. Mr. E. Godfrey was at the organ. The bridesmaids were the Misses Flora Fulcher and Minnie Choat. Mr. George Hockley acted as best man. The bride's dress was of cream serge with gold trimming, and hat to match. She carried white bouquet. The bridesmaids were attired in white silk dresses, with pink trimming, and hats to match. They carried bouquets of pink begonias. There were about 50 presents, among them being tea- pot, cake knife, and butter knife from the Friars' School, and silver cruet stand from Mr. Choat's employees.[5]

According to the Chelmsford Chronicle, 20th January 1911 edition, the silver medal of the Associated Board of the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music was awarded to Miss Flora E. Fulcher, of 83 Baddow Road for having obtained the second highest honours marks in the Intermediate Grade of the recent Local Centre Examinations, the competition being open to all candidates in the British Isles.[6]

1911 Census on the 2nd April 1911 Flora a music student, was living at 83 Baddow Road, Chelmsford, Essex with her parents James and Fanny, and her sister Agnes.[7]

Flora died aged 36 on the 18th January 1928 in Southwark, London. She had been living at 83 Baddow Road, Chelmsford. Essex and died in Guys Hospital, Surrey. Probate of her estate £312.16.4 in London on the 21st February, 1928 passed to her sister Agnes.[8][9]

The Chelmsford Chronicle - Friday 20th January 1928 reported:

Music Teachers Death The death occurred on Wednesday of Miss Flora Ellen Fulcher, L.R.A.M., aged 35, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Fulcher, of 83 Baddow Road, after illness of seven or eight months. The deceased was a very clever musician and taught music at a school in Watford. She was a pupil of Mr. F. E. Swan, F.R.C.O., and a silver medalist. At Christmas she received twenty-four presents from her pupils at the school. An attempt to save her life was made by transfusion of blood, but although her brother, Mr. Albert Fulcher, of Brentwood, gave one and a half pints, it was unsuccessful. Death occurred in Guy's Hospital from pernicious anaemia. Miss Fulcher had one other brother, Mr. O. P. Fulcher, of Duke Street, and six sisters. The funeral will be at the London Road Cemetery, Chelmsford Monday at 2 p.m [10]

According to the Essex Newsman Newspaper, 21st January 1928 edition: A music teacher, Flora Fulcher died after an illness of 7-8 months. She was recorded as daughter of Mr and Mrs James Fulcher, of 83 Baddow Road. She was a clever musician and taught music at a school.[11]
