Dame Elisabeth Jean Frink was an English sculptor and printmaker known for her interest in naturalistic forms, particular of human figures and horses.
Elisabeth was born in 1930 at Great Thurlow Suffolk. [1] The young Elizabeth lived in Lower Thurlow. Her father was an officer serving in the 7th Dragoon guards[2]. He was one of the members of the British Expeditionary Force evacuated from Dunkirk. During the war, the nearby airbases of RAF Stradishall and RAF Castle Camps were targets for air raids. The cellar of the Frink household was used as a communal air raid shelter. On happier days, the Frink meadow was used by the children for games of cricket .Elizabeth herself went away to school but in her holidays is said to have joined with the other children climbing trees in search of jackdaw's nests. She had a pony which she let other children try to ride bareback [3] [4]
She studied at Guildford School of Art from 1947 to 1949, and was a student at the Chelsea School of Art. [5]
Elisabeth Frink was made a Commander of the British Empire, or CBE, in 1969 and was made a Dame in 1982. In June 1992, Queen Elizabeth II made her a Companion of Honor, an award conferred for conspicuous national service. [5]
Elisabeth Frink married three times: first to Michel Jammet in 1955: their son was born in 1958 and the marriage was dissolved in 1963. Her next husband was Edward Pool, who she married in 1969; their marriage was dissolved in 1974. Her final marriage was in 1974 to Hungarian-born Alexander Csaky; the marriage continued up until his death, just a few months before hers.[6]
She died on 18th April 1993 at her home in Woolland, Dorset. [7] [8] She was cremated and in 1996, her ashes were interred, next to her third husband's in the graveyard of the parish church. [9] [10]
