I believe that Mary may be attached to the incorrect father - on her marriage certificate of 10th October 1887 her father is clearly named as John Francis.
Well further to my comment above I now have the birth certificate of Mary Francis (I’m pretty sure it’s the correct Mary Francis!) and yes the father’s name is James with the mother named as Sarah Francis, formerly Lewis so these are indeed correct.
Did Mary make up a father’s name for her marriage certificate? The man she married, Alfred Benting certainly invented a father for the marriage certificate. Or perhaps Mary’s father James was known as John, though he was always down on the census as James. I guess we’ll never know!
