Biography

Henry Adam Fountain, Jr. was born on August 26, 1861^[1] in Sun Hill, Georgia.^[2] He was the son of Henry Fountain and Martha Brantley.^[1] See Research Notes.

Henry married Willie Zipperer on August 5, 1884 in Effingham County.^[3] By 1900, Willie and Henry had 7 children and had adopted a daughter Hattie, aged 4.^[4] They had 10 children by 1910. ^[5]

Henry sold groceries and general merchandise.^[5][6][4]

Henry died on February 19, 1923 in Savannah^[1] and is buried in North Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Port Wentworth (Chatham County), Georgia.^[2]

Notes

Henry travelled to Savannah with his grandmother Susannah sometime around 1870, as he is found there in Jas. Fountain's household with his grandmother.^[7] His mother had remarried in 1870 to Churchwell Bynum. In the 1900 census, a Thomas Bynum is living with the family (possibly Henry's half brother).^[4]

1860 Census: Henry and Martha ^[10] In 1860, Henry is 24 years old. Martha is 26.

1850 Census: Henry in the household of Henry and Susannah.^[11]

In 1870, Martha (widow of Henry Fountain, Sr.), married Churchwell F. Bynum in Washington County, Georgia.^[12]

Note, there are two Martha Bynum's approximately the same age in Washington County, Georgia in the 1880 census. One is married to Church, the other to Richard.
