John was the son of Alexander Fothergill and Ann(e) Langton of Carr End near Bainbridge, Wensleydale. He was born on 2 January (Quaker 11th month) 1675/6 - 1676 in modern reckoning.[1]
He was a farmer and a Quaker preacher.[2][3] His Quaker death record describes him as having been a Quaker minister for "near 50 years".[4] From 1721 to 1724 his Quaker ministry took him in America and to Barbados. Soon after his return, he went to Ireland, returning to England in 1726.[5]
John married Margaret Hough on 5 May (Quaker 3rd month) 1709 in Cheshire. His residence is given as Carr End, Wensleydale, Yorkshire in the marriage record.[6] Their children included:
On 31 January 1726/7 (1727 in modern reckoning) John married Elizabeth Buck.[9] She died in 1745[2]
John died on 13 January (Quaker 11th month) 1744/5 - 1745 in modern reckoning - and was buried at Scotton Quaker burial ground, Yorkshire.[4]
